Panthers Win Title In Dramatic Fashion

The 18's were in Johnstown Pa to participate in the Slap Shotz Invitational. The swept through pool play by shutting out Kiski (Pa) Prep School, overcoming a tough Berks (Pa) Bruins squad before finishing off the host Jets. The Panthers took on Berks for the tournament championship at the famed War Memorial.

The Bruins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before PW came back in the second to tie it at 2 a piece. Berks score the go ahead goal then the Panthers responded with twenty seconds left to knot it at 3-3.  Five minutes into the third period, The Panthers notched their third power play goal to take the lead. Berks never let up and finally tied with a powerplay goal of their own with about two minutes left in the game. In overtime, the Panthers were killing a penalty in the opening minutes when a turnover in the offensive zone allowed PW a shorthanded breakaway that put the finishing touch on an outstanding weekend.

The 18's had killed 79 consectutive penalties over thirteen games before allowing the power play goal in the finals. The officials called fourteen penalties on the Panthers, eleven on Berks, including five 5v3's that were all killed off by PW
